Common PCS questions
Everything service members ask before their first move.
What is a PCS move in the military?
A PCS (Permanent Change of Station) is an official relocation of an active-duty service member to a new duty station. Unlike a TDY (temporary duty), a PCS is a permanent assignment change that typically includes moving your household goods, family, and benefits. Most service members PCS every 2-4 years.
How do I plan a military PCS move?
Start planning your PCS as soon as you receive orders. Key steps include: contacting your gaining unit, scheduling a DPS (Defense Personal Property System) appointment for household goods shipment, applying for BAH at your new duty station, arranging housing or on-post quarters, updating your DEERS records, and coordinating school enrollment if you have children. NextStation gives you a personalized checklist with all 100+ tasks in order.
What is BAH and how is it calculated?
BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) is a monthly allowance paid to service members who do not live in government-provided housing. The amount is based on your pay grade (rank), dependency status (with or without dependents), and the zip code of your duty station. BAH rates are updated annually and are designed to cover the median local rental cost.
What is TLE during a PCS move?
TLE (Temporary Lodging Expense) is a reimbursement allowance that covers the cost of temporary housing during a PCS move. For CONUS-to-CONUS moves you may be eligible for up to 21 days total, split between your old and new duty station. Moving to OCONUS, TLE covers up to 7 days at your CONUS origin. Capped at $290/day. Rates vary based on household size.
How far in advance should I start planning my PCS?
Ideally, begin planning 6 months before your report date. Some tasks — like scheduling household goods pickup, researching schools, and applying for on-post housing — have long lead times. NextStation's 180-day PCS timeline breaks every task into the right week so nothing falls through the cracks.
Is NextStation free to use?
Yes. NextStation has a free tier that includes 50% of your task checklist, basic timeline, and duty station overview. Pro ($9.99 one-time per move) unlocks 100+ tasks, full BAH/TLE budget tracking, HHG inventory, document templates, and SmartReminders. There is no subscription — you pay once per PCS.
